Some significant happenings on Saturday 23rd December when first of all, Bowers & Pitsea broke the Home League Record with a 14-1 defeat of Stansted, the highest result since Eton Manor beat Sawbridgeworth Town 12-0 in 1978-79. Brentwood Town suffered their only Home defeat of the season when Romford hammered them 4-1 which, with their result at Rush Green at the very end of the season would end up as being the only side to win home and away against our champions designate. Thirdly, Tony Mercer transferred from Stansted to London Apsa and scored on his debut So, Brentwood Town led the League into 2007 but the 6th January was a complete washout. On January 20th, Western League, Street came all the way from Somerset without any sign of being travel weary , staying at the Holiday Inn and knocked our last side,  Burnham Ramblers out of the F A Vase. The “ Shoemakers “ ( Clarks’ ) were, themselves, eliminated one round later.

Saturday 3rd February was odd on that the editor found himself sittng in a deckchair on Southend beach , sunbathing ! Just one week on and it was washout time again !

 

In March the F A inspected Brentwood Town’s ground for Step 4 promotion and the club were confident that the enormous amount of work required would be completed by March 31st. Their confidence proved right and a very upbeat Town moved on to Leslie Field, Burnham on Crouch for the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy final on Easter Saturday 7th April when they beat Barkingside 4-0 to lift the first of three trophies. On 21st April with a 3-1 win over Stansted, Brentwood Town duly won the League Championship with the League Chairman presenting the Pearson Trophy on the Tuesday after a lack-lustre 1-0 win over Clapton that, nevertheless , saw the opposition very sportingly applaud the Champions on and off the field.

 

Beaumont Athletic lost 1-8 twice away from home and registered 132 goals in the against columns , one of the highest number in British Senior football and record defensive record in ESL history.

 

So, with the aforementioned win by Romford at Rush Green in front of the highest League attendance of the season, 256, Brentwood Town joined Romford, again, for the League Cup Final at Oakside on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May and, in a thrilling game watched by 585 , Brentwood Town beat the Boro’ 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Glen Golby scoring the winning goal .

 

Romford won the Ted Wiggens Shield as Runners-up. Hullbridge Sports were the Sportsmanship Award winners, from Brentwood Town. Danny Heale of Concord Rangers beat Dean Allen of Bowers & Pitsea FC to win the Don Douglas Trophy for the second time and Lee Stevens of Bowers & Pitsea won the Secretary of the Year . Brentwood Town were promoted to the Ryman League Div 1 North . Ilford were supposed to take their place but were “ saved” owing to problems encountered by a number of other clubs. One of those problems was the liquidation of Enfield FC who have now been allocated to our League as Enfield (1893) FC .

 

Southend Manor reached the semi-final of the Eastern Floodlight Competition but the final has not been played and Petrit Elbi has been offered at trial by new Football League side , Dagenham and Redbridge. Most successful ex-ESL transfer was Michael Kightly who started life at Basildon United and is now plying his trade at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

 

A time for celebration came with the re-opening of “ New” Wembley and a return to its rightful home of the FA Vase Final to which the League accepted a very kind invitation from the Football Association to join all the participating leagues in that competition for lunch and a seat in the Royal Box to see Truro City be the first ever Step 6 club to lift this honour.

 

The final note of success was for London Apsa, who, on the Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May at Stamford Bridge, beat Smethwick on penalties, from Birmingham to lift the National Asian Communities Cup .
